Organic shrimp farming is a nature-friendly aquaculture method that does not use chemicals, genetically modified organisms, or products derived from genetic engineering technology.
Organic shrimp farming differs significantly from conventional shrimp farming practices. It must comply with the requirements and principles specified in TCVN 11041-8:2018 – Organic Agriculture – Part 8: Organic Shrimp.
Organic shrimp farming is an aquaculture model that operates in harmony with nature. It avoids the use of chemical substances, genetically modified organisms, and products derived from genetic engineering. The farming process applies best practices to protect ecosystems, conserve biodiversity, and minimize pollution risks as well as potential negative impacts on human health and the environment.
Organic shrimp farming must meet requirements related to: water quality, seed stock, feed, harvesting, disease prevention and treatment, post-harvest transportation, documentation, and record-keeping.
Organic shrimp certification in conformity with TCVN 11041-8:2018 specifies requirements for commercial farming activities, preliminary processing, harvesting, processing, preservation, and transportation of organic farmed shrimp.
This standard applies to both open and closed farming systems in freshwater, brackish water, and marine environments.
Organic shrimp farming shall comply with general principles specified in Clause 4 of TCVN 11041-8:2018, as well as the following specific principles:
Limiting the use of non-renewable resources and inputs not derived from natural sources.
Using shrimp breeds with strong disease resistance.
Maintaining healthy water environments and conserving surrounding aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
Using shrimp feed derived from sustainably harvested aquatic resources, compound feed processed from organic ingredients and natural-origin materials.
Avoiding harm to protected species during organic shrimp farming operations.
Applying organic shrimp farming models provides numerous benefits for enterprises. Organic certification has become an important factor in assessing product quality. Key reasons for pursuing organic certification include:
Developing shrimp farming according to organic standards is a strategic objective of the agricultural sector. In recent years, the shrimp industry has increasingly focused on ensuring food safety, protecting producers and the environment, and enabling product traceability.
Enterprises complying with the ecological shrimp farming principles and requirements under TCVN 11041-8:2018 will be recognized and granted organic certification.
Certified organic shrimp can be labeled as organic, serving as proof of certification. This helps enhance brand recognition, attract more consumers, stabilize pricing, improve competitiveness, and expand business and import-export opportunities.
Certified organic labeling enhances corporate reputation and quality credibility, builds trust with customers and partners, and supports marketing, advertising, and promotional activities.
Step 1: Registration for Organic Shrimp Certification
Enterprises contact the ISSQ Institute of Quality to register for organic shrimp certification.
Step 2: Development and Guidance on Certification Implementation
After contract agreement, ISSQ conducts consulting activities, including:
Surveying the farming area and reviewing ponds, conversion plans, shrimp seed, feed storage, disease control measures, farm management, wastewater management, etc.
Providing guidance for corrective actions where requirements are not met.
Conducting awareness training on organic aquaculture for staff and internal auditor training for management.
Developing documentation and farming records compliant with organic standards.
Guiding registration procedures and internal audit implementation.
Step 3: Registration for Certification Audit
Step 4: Certification Audit
The certification body’s audit team conducts on-site verification, reviews documentation against actual practices, and requests corrective actions where necessary.
Step 5: Certification Granting
After successful audit completion and corrective actions (if any), the organization will be granted the organic certificate and permitted to use the organic label.
The certificate validity period is up to 02 years from the date of issuance.
These are useful insights into organic shrimp certification in conformity with TCVN 11041-8:2018.
