Benefits of Adopting ISO 20000-1:2018 Certification

The ISO 20000-1 IT Service Management System requires organizations to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve an SMS. The requirements specified in this document include the planning, design, transition, delivery, and improvement of services to meet service requirements and deliver value.

All requirements in ISO 20000-1 are generic and intended to be applicable to all organizations, regardless of type, size, or the nature of the services provided.

Overview

ISO 20000-1:2018 specifies requirements for a service provider to plan, establish, implement, operate, monitor, review, maintain, and improve an SMS. These requirements cover the entire service lifecycle—including planning, design, transition, and delivery—to ensure services meet agreed-upon requirements and provide tangible value.

This standard is well-supported by other documents within the ISO/IEC 20000 series. It adopts a holistic approach to IT service management, defining a set of essential processes ranging from core functions like configuration and change management to operational processes like incident and problem management.

Target Users of ISO 20000-1:2018

ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 primarily targets organizations within the Information Technology sector, including those involved in:

  • Consulting, design, production, and trading of software and technology equipment.

  • IT training and technology transfer services.

The standard can be utilized by:

  • Organizations seeking services from providers who require assurance that their service needs will be met.

  • Organizations requiring a consistent approach from all providers in their supply chain.

  • Service providers aiming to demonstrate their capability to design, transition, deliver, and improve services.

  • Service providers looking to monitor, measure, and review their service management processes.

  • Service providers seeking to improve service delivery through the effective implementation and operation of an SMS.

  • Auditors or assessors using it as a criterion for assessing the conformity of a provider's SMS.

Notable Changes in ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018

Key updates in the 2018 version include:

  • Expanded Scope: Better management of service commodities and multi-vendor environments (whether via external integrators or internal services), focusing on defining customer value.

  • New Features: Enhanced requirements for service planning.

  • Consolidated Clauses: Previously separate clauses for incident management, service requests, service level management, demand management, and capacity management have been streamlined.

Structural and Definitional Revisions:

  • Standardized Terms: New ISO management system terms added, such as "Objective" and "Policy."

  • Annex SL Alignment: The term "Service Provider" has been replaced by "Organization" to align with the high-level structure of Annex SL.

  • Information Security Alignment: Definitions for information security are now linked with ISO 27000. To avoid confusion, "availability" has been replaced by "service availability."

  • Removal of PDCA Reference: Direct references to the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle have been removed. While the principle remains, the removal allows for the application of various improvement methodologies compatible with Annex SL.

What are the Benefits of Holding an ISO/IEC 20000-1 Certificate?

  • Credibility and Competitive Edge: Certification serves as objective evidence that a provider is reliable and delivers high-quality services.

  • Higher Productivity: ISO 20000-1 focuses on service management best practices, ensuring providers can deliver services at peak efficiency.

  • Continuous Improvement: The standard mandates that services are not just maintained, but actively improved. This simplifies processes and minimizes risks, incident-related costs, and the need for expensive troubleshooting.
