Growing public concern about inhumane working conditions in developing countries led to the establishment of Social Accountability International (SAI) in 1997.
So, what is the value of SA 8000 Certification – the Social Accountability Management System? Let’s explore the following article from ISSQ Quality Institute.
SA 8000 is a social accountability management standard system designed to improve working conditions for employees in enterprises, farms, and offices. It was developed and is overseen by Social Accountability International (SAI).
Detailed guidance for implementing and auditing social standards under SA 8000 is available on the organization's official website. SAI also provides SA 8000 training programs and labor standards education for managers, workers, and social compliance auditors.
Over the years, the standard has evolved into a comprehensive framework that enables certified organizations to demonstrate their commitment to fair treatment of workers across industries and countries.
SA 8000 Certification is an international certification standard that encourages organizations to develop, maintain, and apply socially acceptable workplace practices.

This standard provides transparency, measurability, and verifiable evidence of a company’s performance in the following essential areas:
Under SA 8000 Certification, child labor refers to any work performed by a child under the age of 15, unless local law specifies a higher minimum working age.
The standard also establishes requirements regarding the employment of young workers who are under 18 years old but above the minimum legal working age.
A supplier will generally meet these requirements if it complies with local and national labor laws. In addition to age restrictions, the standard requires that:
SA 8000 Certification prohibits suppliers from using forced, bonded, or slave labor. It also prohibits withholding employees’ personal documents, wages, benefits, or property. Retaining personal documents may make it difficult for workers to leave employment voluntarily.
SA 8000 requires employees to have the right to leave the workplace at the end of each working day and the right to terminate their employment with reasonable notice.
According to SA 8000, organizations must:
Auditors may also examine procedures for hazardous material storage, machine guarding, emergency stop controls, and ventilation systems within production areas.
SA 8000 requirements on freedom of association and collective bargaining allow workers to organize and join trade unions of their choice and negotiate collectively with employers. The standard also protects union members from discrimination, harassment, or intimidation.
SA 8000 protects workers from discrimination based on race, origin, gender, caste, religion, political affiliation, and many other characteristics. Suppliers should establish anti-discrimination policies covering recruitment, employment, and termination practices.
Under SA 8000 Certification, suppliers may not:
SA 8000 requires suppliers to treat employees with dignity and respect. The standard strictly prohibits inhumane treatment, coercion, corporal punishment, mental or physical abuse, and verbal abuse.
SA 8000 requires suppliers to provide at least one day off after six consecutive working days. The normal workweek must not exceed 48 hours.
The standard also regulates overtime work. Overtime must be voluntary and may not exceed 12 hours per week.
SA 8000 allows exceptions where permitted by national legislation and collective bargaining agreements.
Wages must be sufficient to meet employees’ basic needs and provide discretionary income.
Factory management must implement additional measures related to corrective actions, preventive actions, policies, and documentation to achieve full compliance with SA 8000 Certification.
The above information outlines the value of SA 8000 Certification – the Social Accountability Management System.
