ISO 29001:2020 certification specifies the quality management system requirements for the design, development, installation, production, and servicing of products for the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries.
Developed as a direct result of cooperation between ISO and the international oil and gas industry (led by the American Petroleum Institute – API), ISO 29001:2020 particularly focuses on the oil and gas supply chain.
ISO 29001:2020 is based on ISO 9001:2015 and incorporates additional requirements that emphasize defect prevention and the reduction of variation and waste from service providers.
These requirements have been developed separately to ensure clarity and auditability. They also provide global consistency and improve quality assurance in the supply of goods and services from suppliers. This is especially important when failures of goods or services may have serious consequences for companies and related industries.
This standard is intended for all organizations working within the oil and gas supply chain. ISO 29001:2020 certification – Quality Management System for the oil and gas industry ensures standardization and continuous improvement in this field.

Frequently Asked Questions
This standard specifies the requirements for a quality management system for organizations supplying products and services to the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries.
It supplements TCVN ISO 9001:2015. Additional requirements and guidance for TCVN ISO 9001:2015 are developed to manage risks and opportunities in the supply chain associated with the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries and to provide a framework for harmonizing requirements with additional standards used in the industry.
Benefits of ISO 29001 Certification
- Globally recognized as best practice for quality management in the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas sectors.
- Proven commitment to safety: The oil and gas industry handles hazardous liquid and gas streams from various processes, requiring careful consideration to ensure the safety of employees and communities.
- Integrated and comprehensive approach: Protects the environment and ensures continuity of production and business operations (maintaining revenue efficiency and profitability not only for the company itself but also for the national economy).
- Integration: ISO/TS 29001 includes both ISO 9001 requirements and specific requirements of the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries related to product design, development, production, installation, and services.
- Continuous improvement: This specification aims to implement a quality management system focused on continuous improvement, emphasizing defect prevention and reducing variation and waste.
What is an ISO Standard?
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is an independent, non-governmental international organization that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of products, services, and systems. ISO standards are applied to ensure consistency.
Implementation Steps
Similar to the implementation process of quality management systems based on standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO 22000, the development and implementation of a QMS according to ISO/TS 29001 also follow the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) principle, including the following steps:
Preparation
- Define the objectives and scope of developing the quality management system;
- Establish an ISO/TS 29001 implementation steering committee;
- Appoint responsible positions according to certification requirements, including the Quality Management Representative (QMR), and assign responsibilities to permanent staff (if necessary);
- Conduct awareness training on ISO/TS 29001 certification;
- Perform a gap analysis against ISO/TS 29001 requirements;
- Develop implementation plans (including an overall ISO/TS 29001 implementation plan and a detailed plan for the documentation development phase);
- Prepare and allocate necessary resources for system development and implementation.
Quality Management System Development
- Provide training on documentation development methods;
- Develop quality management documentation, including quality policy, quality objectives, quality manual, procedures, work instructions, and forms.
Implementation
- Communicate and guide the application of the documentation system;
- Implement and monitor application across departments and units;
- Review and improve processes and documentation to ensure convenient and effective work control.
Internal Audit and Management Review
- Train internal auditors for the ISO/TS 29001 quality management system;
- Plan and conduct internal audits;
- Take corrective actions and finalize the system after audits;
- Conduct management review on quality performance.
Registration and Certification Audit
- Select and register with a certification body;
- Conduct pre-certification audit;
- Stage 1 certification audit (preliminary assessment);
- Make corrections and improvements;
- Re-audit to confirm system readiness after Stage 1;
- Stage 2 certification audit;
- Make corrections and improvements;
- Obtain ISO/TS 29001 certificate (valid for 3 years);
- Maintain and continuously improve the system, while undergoing periodic surveillance audits (every 9 or 12 months).
