Environmental protection is currently an issue receiving strong attention from organizations and countries around the world. Therefore, organizations and enterprises are beginning to apply environmental management measures, including the ISO 14001:2015 standard system.
To build a sustainable Environmental Management System in accordance with ISO 14001:2015, enterprises need to prepare the following:
First, plan to establish a dedicated department responsible for ISO implementation (set up an ISO committee). This department will coordinate implementation activities with consulting units or external agencies.
Develop plans to arrange timelines and necessary resources to work together with consulting organizations in implementing activities according to the plan.
Managers assign responsibilities to personnel to develop documentation, records, and apply them in practice.
Enterprises need to improve infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency and minimize risks.
Regular coordination and interaction with consulting organizations to ensure implementation progress and convenience.
The leadership team and consulting organization arrange schedules and develop plans to implement the project. Enterprise management must inform all employees clearly about the implementation of the ISO 14001:2015 system.
To ensure effective system operation, enterprises need to establish an ISO standards committee. Members usually include representatives from different departments.
The ISO committee is mainly responsible for drafting and internally evaluating the system.
In addition, an emergency response team is required to handle unexpected situations such as fire, explosion, chemical spills, etc.
The consulting unit conducts a detailed survey of enterprise activities to clearly understand the current operational conditions of the company and factory.
Based on this, needs for upgrading, modification, and training are identified to develop an implementation plan.
With the cooperation of the consulting organization, the ISO committee prepares a detailed implementation plan to proactively deploy the system.
Awareness training is organized, including developing environmental documentation and forms. Training also covers ISO 14001:2015 awareness, application methods, and other supporting content.
With guidance from the consulting organization, key ISO committee members are assigned to prepare documents according to the agreed consulting plan.
Environmental conditions and issues are determined through environmental parameters such as wastewater, emissions, noise, etc.
Measurement results help enterprises clearly understand their current environmental performance.
After obtaining environmental measurement results, consultants and enterprises determine necessary infrastructure adjustments or pollution treatment technologies.
After documents are completed, they are reviewed by leadership and consultants. If appropriate, leadership approves and implements them across the enterprise.
Once approved, departments implement the issued documents. Operational training programs may be conducted at this stage.
ISO committee members are trained in internal auditing skills according to ISO 14001.
The consulting organization conducts the first audit to review implementation effectiveness and provide practical experience for trained internal auditors.
Identified nonconformities are corrected by the enterprise in accordance with ISO 14001 requirements.
Once the system is ready, consultants and the enterprise agree on the certification audit schedule.
The certification body conducts the certification audit according to the planned schedule.
Nonconformities identified during certification audits are corrected by the enterprise.
The enterprise receives the ISO 14001 certificate issued by the certification body.
The certificate is valid for approximately 3 years, with surveillance audits conducted at least once every 12 months.
